What is Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator helps you quickly determine how much gratuity to leave at restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, and for other services. It eliminates mental math by instantly computing the tip amount based on your bill and desired tip percentage. Our calculator goes beyond basic tip math. You can split the bill between multiple people, round the total up or to the nearest dollar/pound, compare different tip percentages side by side, and switch between major currencies. Whether you are dining out in New York, London, or Paris, this tool gives you the right amount in seconds.

How It Works

Enter your bill amount, select or type a tip percentage, and choose how many people are splitting the bill. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total bill, and per-person breakdown. You can optionally round the total up or to the nearest whole number for convenience. A comparison table shows what different tip percentages would look like on your bill.

Formula

Tip Amount = Bill ร— (Tip% / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total / Number of People

Formula Explained

The tip is a percentage of the bill. Multiply the bill by the tip rate (as a decimal) to get the tip amount, then add it to the bill for the total. If splitting, divide the total evenly among the group. When rounding is enabled, the total is adjusted up (or to the nearest whole number) and the effective tip percentage recalculates accordingly.

Example

Bill: $85.50, Tip: 18%, Split: 2 people Tip Amount: $85.50 ร— 0.18 = $15.39 Total: $85.50 + $15.39 = $100.89 Per Person: $100.89 / 2 = $50.45 Tip Per Person: $15.39 / 2 = $7.70 With "round up": Total = $101.00, effective tip = 18.13%

Frequently Asked Questions

In the US, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. For excellent service, 20-25% is common. In the UK, 10-15% is typical, and in many European countries, tipping is optional or a small amount (5-10%) is appreciated. Always check if a service charge is already included.

To calculate a 20% tip, multiply the bill by 0.20. For example, on a $50 bill: $50 ร— 0.20 = $10 tip, making the total $60. A quick mental shortcut: find 10% by moving the decimal point left, then double it.

Standard etiquette is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people tip on the total including tax for simplicity. The difference is usually small. Our calculator uses the total you enter โ€” just enter the pre-tax amount if you prefer to tip before tax.

For equal splitting, divide the total (including tip) by the number of people. Our calculator does this automatically. For unequal splitting, some people split based on what each person ordered. Enter different amounts for each group if needed.

Tipping customs vary across Europe. In the UK, 10-12.5% is common at restaurants. In France and Italy, service is often included (check "service compris"). In Germany, rounding up to the nearest euro or adding 5-10% is typical. In Scandinavia, tipping is not expected but appreciated.
