What is Ideal Weight Calculator?

An ideal weight calculator estimates the healthy weight range for your height and gender using multiple established medical formulas. Rather than giving a single number, our calculator shows results from 5 different formulas, providing a range that accounts for individual variation. The calculator includes: Devine (most commonly used medically), Robinson (revised Devine), Miller (alternative estimate), Hamwi (clinical standard), and BMI-based range (18.5โ€“24.9 BMI). You can also enter your current weight to see how you compare.

How It Works

Enter your height, gender, and optionally your current weight. The calculator computes ideal weight using all 5 formulas simultaneously and displays them in a comparison table and bar chart. A visual weight range bar shows underweight, healthy, and overweight zones. If you enter your current weight, it shows your BMI and how far you are from the ideal range.

Formula

Devine: Male = 50 + 2.3 ร— (inches over 5ft), Female = 45.5 + 2.3 ร— (inches over 5ft)
Robinson: Male = 52 + 1.9 ร— (inches over 5ft), Female = 49 + 1.7 ร— (inches over 5ft)
Miller: Male = 56.2 + 1.41 ร— (inches over 5ft), Female = 53.1 + 1.36 ร— (inches over 5ft)
Hamwi: Male = 48 + 2.7 ร— (inches over 5ft), Female = 45.5 + 2.2 ร— (inches over 5ft)
BMI Range: Weight = BMI ร— height(m)ยฒ, where BMI = 18.5 to 24.9

Formula Explained

All height-based formulas use a base weight at 5 feet tall and add a fixed amount per inch of additional height. They were developed from population studies in the 1970sโ€“1990s. The Devine formula is the basis for most others. The BMI-based range is the most modern approach, recommended by the WHO, defining healthy as 18.5โ€“24.9 kg/mยฒ.

Example

Male, 5'9" (175 cm): Devine: 73.0 kg (161 lbs) Robinson: 69.1 kg (152 lbs) Miller: 68.9 kg (152 lbs) Hamwi: 72.3 kg (159 lbs) BMI Range: 56.7โ€“76.5 kg (125โ€“169 lbs) Ideal range: 68.9โ€“73.0 kg (152โ€“161 lbs) Average: 70.8 kg (156 lbs)

Tips & Best Practices

  • โœ“Focus on the weight range rather than any single number.
  • โœ“Consider your body composition โ€” muscle mass affects the numbers.
  • โœ“BMI-based range is the broadest and most accepted by health organizations.
  • โœ“Revisit your ideal weight as a reference point, not a strict target.
  • โœ“Pair ideal weight knowledge with BMR/TDEE calculations for actionable diet planning.

Common Use Cases

  • โ€ขSetting realistic weight goals based on scientific formulas
  • โ€ขUnderstanding healthy weight ranges for your height and build
  • โ€ขComparing your current weight against established benchmarks
  • โ€ขDiscussing weight targets with your healthcare provider
  • โ€ขPairing with BMR and calorie calculators for comprehensive health planning

Frequently Asked Questions

A single "ideal" weight is misleading because healthy weight depends on muscle mass, bone density, body composition, age, and ethnicity. Showing a range from multiple formulas gives a more realistic picture. The BMI-based range (18.5โ€“24.9) is the broadest and most commonly referenced by health organizations.

No single formula is "best." Devine is most widely used in medicine (for drug dosing). Robinson revised Devine to be less gender-biased. Miller gives lighter estimates. Hamwi is a clinical standard. The BMI range (18.5โ€“24.9) is recommended by the WHO. Look at the range across all formulas for the fullest picture.

Being outside the ideal range does not automatically mean you are unhealthy. Athletes and muscular individuals often exceed ideal weight formulas. Conversely, someone within range could have health issues. Focus on overall health markers โ€” blood pressure, cholesterol, energy, mobility โ€” rather than a single number.

Muscle weighs more than fat by volume. A 5'10" man at 190 lbs with 12% body fat is very different from one at 190 lbs with 30% body fat. Ideal weight formulas do not account for muscle mass, which is why they are guidelines โ€” not diagnoses. Consider DEXA scans or calipers for body composition analysis.
