What is Age Calculator?
How It Works
The calculator takes your date of birth and compares it against a target date (defaulting to today). It counts the full completed years first, then the remaining full months, then the remaining days. For total conversions, it accounts for leap years accurately โ every 4 years, February has 29 days instead of 28, adding an extra day to that year. The tool uses JavaScript's date handling to ensure precision across all time zones and date formats.
Formula
Years = floor((targetDate - birthDate) in years) Remaining months = months between last birthday and target date Remaining days = days after last full month Total days = sum of all days including leap days
Formula Explained
The core of age calculation involves subtracting dates in a hierarchical way. First, we find how many complete 12-month cycles have passed since birth โ that is your age in years. Then we count the remaining months that have passed since your last birthday. Finally, we count the remaining days after those months. Leap years are handled by checking if any February 29 dates fall between the birth date and target date, and adding that extra day when they do.
Example
Birth date: March 15, 1995 Today: October 6, 2025 Years: 30 (last birthday was March 15, 2025) Months: 6 (April, May, June, July, August, September) Days: 21 (Oct 1โ6 minus the start of October period) Exact age: 30 years, 6 months, 21 days Total days lived: approximately 11,163 days Next birthday: in 160 days (March 15, 2026 โ a Sunday)
Tips & Best Practices
- โUse this calculator for medical forms that ask for age in months โ especially useful for children under 2.
- โLegal documents like wills and insurance policies sometimes require your exact age in days.
- โIf you are born on December 31, you are technically the same age as someone born on January 1 of the same year for most of the calendar year.
- โThe calculator can also compute the age of anything with a date โ a company founding date, a product launch date, or an anniversary.
- โRemember that in some cultures, age is counted differently. Korean age, for example, starts at 1 at birth and adds a year every January 1st.
